tripadvisorNo matter where I travel, I'm always interested in visiting old houses, from colonial to ante-bellum to Gilded Age. From Natchez to Charleston to Newport. Visit the Magevney House in Memphis. Located at 198 Adams Avenue, in the Victorian Village, it was built in the 1830s as a clapboard cottage. In 1839, the first Catholic mass in Memphis was celebrated in the house. In 1840, the first Catholic marriage in the city took place here. And in 1841, the first Catholic baptism in Memphis was performed here. In 2009, the house was opened to the public on the first Saturday of each month from 1 to 4. Admission is free. Part of the Pink Palace Family of Museums, Magevney House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
MoreOne of the oldest houses in Memphis. It was great to learn that the first Catholic experiences were held here at this house for the Memphis area.
MoreOne of the oldest if not the oldest houses in a Memphis. This was more of a middle class home. It belonged to Eugene Magevney. The house was where the first marriage, baptism and Catholic mass were held.
MoreThis is a very small home with lots of charm. Free to see and walk around. Placards are all around the home with points of interest and history.
MoreEvery local resident and tourist should see the historic Magevney House. It's one of the few original buildings left in the area. You will learn a lot during your visit.
