This lovely 80-acre (32-hectare) cemetery is a wonderful place to go on a warm afternoon. Huge, shady trees protect the most interesting collection of graves and gravestones in the city. Elaborate Victorian monuments mark the final resting places of city founders such as Robert Church, the first black millionaire in Memphis, as well as Mayor E.H. "Boss" Crump and 19 generals from the Confederate Army.

tripadvisorMade a visit to explore the cemetery. Beautiful for the most part. Just watch where you walk and stand. This place is covered up with fire ants. Just caught myself as I was standing on one and jumped off before it got bad.
MoreWe often visit historic cemeteries in the cities we visit while on roadtrips so looked into a visit to Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis. And found that they had a special tour event that weekend....their annual Soul of the City tour, and this year it featured Memphis Music! Since it was our first visit to this cemetery, we chose to attend the 5:30 tour so that it was still light out. Run by the cemetery volunteers group, this tour tells the story of selected cemetery residents (based on the theme) told by volunteers taking on the persona of another cemetery resident. The stories were interesting and compelling, and the historical reenactors terrific in their presentations. $20 per person. The tour lasted about an hour. A great way to learn a little Memphis Music history! We will definitely visit the cemetery should we have another opportunity to visit Memphis!
MoreThis is a cemetary that has artistic headstones dated back as far back the 1800's. Some of the stones had proverbs and stories on how they passed. Some gave advice. Many were made from many diffrent materials and different languages. You can drive threw the entire site if you wish. I chose to drive part and then walk part for photography purposes. This is a free attraction that I recommend on cool day.
MoreVery good tour. Went with my family and enjoyed. Gives a great history of the city of Memphis. Especially the impact of Yellow Fever.
Morewent looking for a specific monument there was a maintenance person who took me right to it . Forever grateful .
