This tiny house stands as a reminder of both a dark period in American history and the efforts of many to remedy the wrongs of slavery. A merchant named Jacob Burkle, who ran a stockyard before the American Civil War, provided a haven for many runaway slaves on their journey through the Underground Railroad. Here you can see where they waited for the instructions that helped them find their way across the Mississippi River to freedom.

tripadvisorI was really looking forward to going to this Estate/Museum but a fire has significantly damaged it. Memphis has many places you can visit to learn about the Civil War, enslavement of blacks and this will be great when it reopens in the future.
MoreToday 1/20/24 at 2pm we were going to go see this historic place although we couldn't attend as the building is on fire. We are hopeful that many of the items were able to be saved but this is scary for all of them. May the owners and city of Memphis still support this great historical time of American history!
MoreLearned about Memphis history. They ask for you to not take pictures of the inside. Why I don’t know and wish you could.
MoreSome verified facts. Many bias unverified facts that reported. One thing they said they said sharks have in their DNA they are still looking fo slaves overthrown to eat. Complete nonsense. Also most abolitionist were non-whites. This historical place is slanted anti-white. I would not waste time or money in seeing this place. It is biased anti-Caucasian. Very sad. I visited Underground Railroad in Cincinnati. Very different story told down here in Memphis. Very sad. Many northern troops and whites sacrificed lives lives to emancipate slaves. Not told here
MoreDefinitely worth it! Everyone in my family learned lots of new information. Tour was crowded, and started on the hour. We all enjoyed the tour more than we would have viewing it by ourselves. We went when it was not busy on a weekday. They do take credit cards.
