Casa de Thomas Edson

Thomas Edison Butchertown House Building ·$

Although the 19-year-old Thomas Edison only resided at 729-31 East Washington Street for a year, it was during his time here working as a telegraph key operator that he explored improvements to the telegraph. Today, the Thomas Edison House continues to support the inquisitive spirit by organizing the annual 'Invention Convention', where school children compete with their own wunderkind ideas. The 'Edison Extravaganza Evening' is another annual event that presents silent and live auctions. Have a party or group function that requires a historical inventor's living quarters (and tranquil backyard garden)? The house is available to rent for up to 50 people.

I was surprised to discover Louisville's link to Thomas Edison, this charming small house, where he lived for about 1.5 years, delivers an authentic glimpse into his early life, like viewing his actual bedroom almost intact. Don't expect the grand invention displays of New Jersey's Thomas Edison National Historical Park; its intimate history. The top-notch professional docent tour was worth every penny. I highly recommend.

Walked a looooong time in the sweltering heat to discover it wasn’t open when it should have been. Very disappointed. Not sure why they say they are open if they don’t keep those hours.

We were very much disappointed at our attempted visit. We had gone on the website both the night before and the morning of our visit. I am a fan of Mr. Edison, having read several books dealing with him and was very much looking forward to this. When we arrived on a Friday morning about 10:20, the sign out front clearly said Tuesday - Saturday, opening at 10:00. We found a place to park nearby, in the rain, and quickly came back, only to note a Sign in the window saying it was closed from June 4 - 14, due to not having enough employees! Why could they NOT have mentioned temporarily closed on the Web Site! We made a special trip to go there (it is not in the nicest area of Louisville) and get there and there is nothing but the little sign in the window. You cannot even see it from the street. The building is quite old, and the property does look like it could use some tlc. Disappointed.

Quick informative tour! We showed up after a snowstorm and the docent was very happy to see people come in! She was very knowledgeable about Edison and other historical events!

We came across this amazing tiny museum packed with Edison achievements including a working gramophone. We had a personalized tour which made the visit perfect. Just ask when you enter. This place is a must see
