When we went into the visitors center, the man we spoke with was very knowledgeable about the history of the park. They let nature be nature and the don't disturb any habitats. If tree limbs fall they move them just off the path and let nature do its thing. It's surrounded by businesses who don't seem to care about the environment so it's a fight for them to preserve. It was heartbreaking to see all the businesses surrounding this beautiful park.

McConnell Springs is the location of the original 1775 encampment where Lexington got its founding name. Due to its historic water source, it was surrounded by farms, a dairy and was even rural thru the 1950's, but now it is encircled by industrial parks. Fortunately, in the early 1990's a group was able to save what we see today with some buffers and hopefully guarantee its survival. There are walking paths, old historic stone walls and buildings, the stream and ponds with informational plaques and pictures along the way. There is also visitors center with exhibits, information and rest rooms.

With thanks to those that saved this park from being filled in, it is a little sanctuary within a large industrial area. It doesn't take long to stroll through the park it is pretty even though you can hear heavy machinery being operated nearby.

McConell Springs is a great place to go for a quick hike or to spend the day. It is right inside the city and maybe a half mile from the Distillery District. Such a pretty place!
