tripadvisorSo, if you planned your trip to Cleveland you have probably got two or three things that are at the top of your list. Honestly, the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is on the must-do, but it is widely criticized as simply a collection of artifacts, swag and disconnected stories placed in a loud, unremarkable setting by people who have questionable authority in Rock 'n Roll. The Football Hall of Fame is the opposite in Canton, full of docents who are knowledgable and friendly, cohesive stories and real knowledge of football. Those are probably your top two though, again, arguably the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame should be in perhaps Memphis or Los Angeles. Back to Tower City the history is remarkable and a slice of American History in the 19th century which is unparalleled. It's well worth watching videos online to learn of the train history here and what happened to this iconic structure after the demise of passenger rail in the United States. We were unable, due to time constraints, to go down to the rail platform where local commuter rail still runs. Amtrak has a different station now, unfortunately, and there is no plan to bring it back within this station. Attempts have been made to make this an urban shopping hub over the years, but most of that is gone now with just a few shops, fast food, and a casino. Is it worth seeing? Yes. Go on the weekend and park on the street right out in front for minimal cost. If you like architecture, it is unbelievable the human toll and expense spent here on construction. We also did not have time to go up in the observation deck as we were only in Cleveland for about a day and a half. We crammed in the home where Christmas Story was filmed and the Kent State May 4 Memorial where seven college students were shot by the Ohio National Guard. We missed President Garfields grave due to lack of time. There is a lot to do in Cleveland and we have only mentioned the bare minimum, but this is certainly worth a short walk through.
MoreBefore we departed on our New York vacation, our friends invited us to attend a Starship, George Thurogood, and Billy Idol concert here in Minneapolis. We loved it. Our genres include country western and rock and extend back to the 1960s. So, on our way home on our trip we budgeted several hours to take in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. It seemed to be under construction. We parked in the street after establishing a parking account on our phone. We walked around to what seemed to be the front door, came in, and stopped at the rail in an attempt to get our bearings and see what was going on. Well, no. The man who was sitting doing nothing told me I could not stand there and look, that I had to proceed to the left to the fake metal detector as I walked through with my phone, keys, belt and miscellaneous metal items. My wife walked through with her full purse as the dude paid little attention and no beeps were heard. He pointed downstairs and attempted to buy tickets at the laptops that were set up to purchase tickets (you are supposed to buy them online before you arrive). Of course it didn't work and the lady finally came from out back and explained to us and the couple next to us that we have to remove our email address from the form or it will not work. So, she left and we turned to the Saturday Night Live display which, according to the disinterested docent taking the tickets, is the main display of the Hall of Fame. Cute video with lots of the skits about musicians and very little content of the musicians themselves. I'm going to skip this boring review and move ahead. The displays contain pieces of costumes and memorabilia for many artists. Their music all plays over each other, so for example, you are interested in the Mamas and Pappas, you will be listening to it and Jimmy Hendrix blasting at the same time. Multiply by 200 or so exhibits. The swag in the gift shop is overpriced, poorly made and says Cleveland on everything. No listening headphones, not much written, just a bunch of music all completing. A disinterested and disengaged staff, simply a warehouse of stuff. We visited the Football Hall of Fame the next day at nearby Canton and it was so much better. Great displays, friendly staff, easy and free parking. We really wonder why the poorly done Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland. Although Nashville is the Country Music capitol, it really is the music center of the United States. If you don't have to time to visit here, you will not have missed a bucket list item.
MoreWith its own metro station stop and its location in the heart of downtown, I would have expected more from my visit here but sadly the majority of Tower City Center was either closed or vacant. It seems as though the potential is here with some room to hold events (not sure if they do already) but, besides the architecture of the building itself, the rest is a but underwhelming to say the least.
MoreWas hoping to do some Christmas shopping and there's hardly any stores and the ones that are there are severely overpriced. Homeless begging for meals/money inside. It was very chilly. Skip this place!!
MoreFor the most part it was good the food was good but shopping at the dollar store was absolutely horrible. Guy followed us around a cussed my daughter of stealing before we left store and checked her out side the store. It was embarrassing to be treated like that. I don't recommended shopping there.!!
