tripadvisorArt is a matter of perspective. Art appreciation need not be “high brow”. Art is for the public at large. For those who enjoy seeing the world through the artist’s eye, museums and art galleries abound in urban, suburban and rural America. Dayton certainly is no exception. One such gallery in the city is located at the crest of High Street (No. 48) in the historic St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood. The High Street Gallery is the visionary culmination of the Dayton Society of Artists, a collaborative alliance dating back to 1938. The DSA’s mission statement reads that it “aims to engage and support the Dayton community by providing artists of all levels with access to art education, exhibition opportunities, and professional development, and to enrich the people of Miami Valley through high quality exhibitions and programming.” A recent and first-time visit to the High Street Gallery confirmed the aforementioned purpose of the artist alliance handily. Housed in one of the restored homes in the district, the two story brick building has undergone considerable renovation and upgrading to transform the edifice into an inviting and comfortable venue for the exhibition of area artists. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. At the time of my recent visit, the 2018 Spring Exhibition in place (May 4 – June 9) was showcasing the works of Miami Valley artists working in a wide variety of artistic media: oil on canvas, watercolor, ink on paper, ceramic, mixed media on wood, egg tempera on panel, silver gelatin print, photography, scenography, woodcut, etching, collage, woodcarving and a number of other presentational formats. The exhibition was displayed in a handful of gallery rooms whose high-ceilinged, sage-colored walls combined most effectively with ivory-cream trim woodwork to provide an elegant and visually satisfying backdrop for the display of hung art. Each piece in the show was numbered and described in an accompanying handout obtained when first beginning the exhibition tour. The majority of artwork appeared available for purchase. Prices were shown below each numbered description. The elevation of the ceiling and the door openings invitingly framed the next room’s offerings. Although the gallery is working towards making portions of the gallery more handicapped compliant, there is apparently no obstacle at the present moment for access by the disabled. Basically, the upgrades are seen as improvement upon the already workable. There is no required commencement point for the wander-at-will tours even though the layout is, as mentioned, numbered sequentially. The architecture of the first floor rooms lend themselves to easy foot traffic flow in any direction and ample depth of floor space for ease of viewing the wall mounted artwork. The doorways serve to frame each room’s offerings and occasionally provide a glimpse of eye catching art waiting at the turn of the next corner. Exhibitions change periodically throughout the course of the calendar year. A very pleasant docent greeted me and explained something of the history of the alliance and the manner in which the present show was assembled. Gallery goers need to be aware that visitation hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 5 pm. Free parking is available in the lot across the street and depending on the time of day curbside near the gallery building. There is a decided uplift when visiting this smaller gallery located atop one of Dayton’s hilltop communities. This art venue is not a high-brow art outing but visually sensory High (Street) browsing at its best. Not off putting, but invitingly accessible. Those looking to gain a window onto Miami Valley’s art community are encouraged to visit St. Anne’s Hill at a time when the gallery is open. The visit will be enriching and the enjoyment of the tour long lasting.
