We were in search of the Elvis statue and happened upon this public park. It is named in honor of the admiral who returned Hawaii back to native rule after the British siege of 1843. It was named to honor British Rear Admiral Richard Thomas. On July 31, 1843, Thomas restored the government to Kamehameha III. The Hawaiian flag was raised replacing the British Union Jack flag. When sovereignty was restored, Kamehameha III said: “Ua mau ke ea o ka āina i ka pono means The Sovereignty of the Hawaiian nation is restored by righteousness. In the park is a statue of King Kamehameha III. The open space park is conducive to exploring or simply enjoying a respite from sightseeing, having a lunch break, or sitting near the fountain watching the birds.

Thomas Square has some historic value and there are public restrooms. Parking can be a problem but there is some available. But when I visited in Nov 2019 there were lots of homeless people there. No one hassled me, but it detracted from the park.

Not really a good advertisement for Honolulu. While it has nice green lawn that may attract locals, and nice banyan trees that look exotic to visitors, the number of homeless people camped out on the lawn is off putting and sad.

This square is totally ordinary. There is no reason to visit it unless you happened to be in the area and need to take a break

Right in the middle of Honolulu you will find a restful fountain where you can sit and watch birds, enjoy your bag lunch, and the tropical breezes at Thomas Square. Bernie Strehler Molokai Hawaii
