tripadvisorToday we looked for the confluence where the Willamette River joins the Columbia River. Alas, we found run down Kelley Point Park surrounded by Portland industrial ports and warehouses. Parking lots were trash filled, neglected, covered in cottonwood fuzz. We couldn't see the water, and it looked too sketchy to leave the car to explore. Portland Parks says there are upgrades coming in 2022, 2023. We'll try again then.
MoreI went Monday, July 26th. We took the 3 year old. She loved to watch the big ships, barges and waves in the water. She played in the water, and several people were swimming despite the signage posted everywhere stating no swimmingParking lot was clean, and despite feeling uneasy with the issues surrounding car theft in Portland, we felt it looked less sketchy than anticipated. I did want to park way in the back with all the other cars in a visible spot to avoid the possibility of being near anything that would lead to car theft. There seemed to not be any hint of activities in the park, or parking lot which indicated criminal activity lurking about. We enjoyed the fact there are trails leading to all types of areas along the river. Traveling to the beach area would require ability to walk along parallel pathways for some distance in order to select beach front that would work for your situation. There was a group with loud music, however it was just music with a beat, no lyrics, and was passable for beach atmosphere. The fact is, this beach is so large that you can literally find your solace if you want it. There are huge green grass hills with picnic areas and along the beach there are nice sandy beach areas to set up for water front enjoyment. The restrooms are clean.
MoreWhen the crowds are noisy, the tension is building, and you need quiet with your peace... this is the place.
MoreUnder-appreciated and often pretty empty, this lovely park has good river views and walking trails. Beach access (although signs say to not go into the water) and picnic areas. Worth the short drive to get there!
MoreStroll the concrete path to the confluence point of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Stay out of the water, as the current's are vicious. Bring a light lunch and watch huge cargo ships come into Portland and Vancouver from the ocean. There's even a beach, when the tides are low.
