Located within the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Rackham Auditorium opened six decades ago and has since witnessed numerous events from lectures and seminars to musical performances. Elegantly decorated interiors, amphitheater seating arrangements and wonderful ceiling designs give this place a rich look. The auditorium proves to be an ideal venue for a great theater experience. Named after Horace H. Rackham - a lawyer by profession, this venue spells grandeur all the way.

tripadvisorMy colleague and I attended a series of lectures in the fourth-floor auditorium in the Rackham building. Once you get past the extreme greenness of the decor (Kermit the Frog would feel right at home), you settle in to very comfortable seats, all of which have an unobstructed view of the lectern. The acoustics of the domed auditorium obviate the need for sound amplification. You hear the speakers and audience questioners perfectly.
MoreStunning graceful beauty of this 1938 Art Deco University of Michigan building enhances public concerts and events held in its elegantly decorated first floor auditorium. Recently we have enjoyed music ranging from Beethoven quartets by the Takacs Quartet to Sufi singing by Sanam Marvi. Excellent acoustics, sight lines, beyond first-class seats. If you visit take some extra time to appreciate the extraordinary architectural and decorative details all around-----painted ceilings; astrological lighting fixtures; elaborate metal work doors, windows, railings; inlaid floors; harmonious color schemes. Upper floors also rewarding if they are open for visiting. This building anchors the north end of the main UM campus mall, facing the Graduate Library at the south end. In between are the green spaces like the Diag and other landmark buildings like Hill Auditorium and the League. You'll be glad you didn't overlook this gem.
