This was my second visit to the Idea Factory, at 924 Royal St, in the New Orleans French Quarter. A few years before, my brother-in-law introduced me to this store, and I knew that it was the ideal place to shop for a present for a young family member - or two. This time, I got to introduce my wife to the wonderful shop. The Idea Factory is a bit difficult to explain, n that it’s a retail shop, for hand-crafted wooden items, but at one level, it’s an art gallery to wooden creations, and then almost a science museum, as so many of the items have rather intricate workings. On this gloomy December day, we were looking for “toys,” and found both a beautifully-crafted train, and then a truck - a toy for each child, and ones which would both serve them well, and last - essentially legacy toys for the next generation. The shop had changed hands, since my first visit, but I got time to spend with the new owner, who was certainly intent on carrying on in the tradition of the originator, and from the displays, I would say that he was on-track. Everything that I saw was beautifully crafted, and exhibited the care and craftsmanship, that went into each piece. Though the train was a given, and the truck fit the bill for the second present, there was just so much to take in - almost overwhelming. Even if one is not looking to make a retail purchase, they must stop in, and treat this shop, as though it is a museum and art gallery. Spend the time, to see everything, and you will be rewarded.

I love this shop! Walking in, you immediately discover that Idea Factory is going to bring you back to simpler times. The times before modern technology when toys were built to last. Everything here is hand made out of wood, and it's a sight to behold. Tops, puzzles, train whistles, secret boxes and much more are on display and available for purchase for the kid (or big kid) in your life. They have a fantastic selection of unique gifts that are sure to capture the imagination. The staff is very friendly and is more than happy to explain how everything works and you are sure to find something that you'll enjoy. I want to go back and buy one of the slide boxes to keep my rings in, so I'm sure I'll be making a trip back to this delightful spot.

Great hidden gem near bourbon st near local boutique art shops and clothing stores. Very knowledgeable staff with a wide range of toys, gifts, games office products, boxes, home if it's made of wood they have it or could get it great place to shop.
