Elmwood Cemetary Cemetery ·$

As one of the oldest cemeteries in all of Michigan, the Elmwood Cemetery has been around since 1846. The cemetery began on a modest stretch of 42 acres (16.99 hectares), doubling in size over the years to a sprawling 86 acres (34.8 hectares). Lush vegetation and majestic groves of towering trees make this a serene and peaceful place to visit. You can see a special memorial for Civil War soldiers where a flag is flown continuously in their honor. Other notable memorials include famous governors, mayors, abolitionists, prominent businessmen and many others. The beautiful garden which surrounds these graves has been awarded a Level I accreditation by the Morton Arboretum and the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. To truly recognize the historic significance of the cemetery, go on one of the two free Tombstone Tales Guided Walking Tours.

I took the Mausoleum tour and it was amazing. The mausoleums were super interesting, the guide was very knowledgeable and engaging and the cemetery is beautiful. This was my first time there and I hope to return. I loved it!

Elmwood Cemetery is amazing! Not only beautiful and expansive, but if you're into the paranormal this place has plenty to experience. It is notable mostly for being the site of Bloody Run battle in the 1700's when the Native tribes banded together against the British. Also this is the site of the Veiled Lady monument, an impressive gravestone that went through a deathly journey to end up at the cemetery. My friends and I went just as dusk was coming and we were alone. We could hear rustling around and the occasional odd noise even though no one else was there. Definitely gave us some strange vibes and we felt like we were being watched. 100% recommend checking out!

This is Detroit's historic cemetery! I've been here several dozen times through the years. In all seasons. Located east of downtown Detroit, it is the final resting place of notable figures in Detroit history: U.S. senators, Michigan governors, and Detroit mayors; industrialists in the automotive, shipping, financial, lumber, judicial and legal, beverage, dry goods, and other lines of business; African American leaders; military; firefighters; and many others. Designed as a rural cemetery, its natural landscaping allows one to enjoy the rolling hills once more widespread in the area. The Battle of Bloody Run at Parent's Creek took place on this land in 1763; today you can see the only place where the Creek still runs above ground. Most of the paths (roads) in the cemetery are paved. Elmwood Cemetery is a pleasant green space to wander about, or even ride about. They offer guided walking tours on select dates, as well as bird walks, and special events on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

We traveled here from Southern Illinois to find out information about some Detroit ancestors. Yep, most people go to the beach for Spring Break, but we go to cemeteries and libraries. This is an amazing place to visit. Our first stop was in the office. The ladies there were very helpful. We told them the names of some of the ancestors we thought were buried there and they gave us a map and stacks of books. They told us the Volume and Page number to find the original entry made when our ancestors were buried there. We found that there were some relatives buried nearby that we didn't know about. These ladies have a wonderful setting to work in. The building is gorgeous and perfect for the calm feeling of the grounds. The website gives information about tours, bird watching, tree information and relaxing there. I think if I lived in the area, I'd spend a lot of time taking photos. It's beautiful know matter where you look, Picture perfect!

Elmwood is a very beautiful cemetery and it is one of Detroit's oldest cemeteries. The cemetery is home to some of the finest people that lived in Detroit including Detroit's former mayor Coleman A. Young, Bernhard Stroh (brewer), and many more.
