tripadvisorI was driving along Interstate 80 and saw a sign for the Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter, Iowa. As a baseball fan and have some time to kill, I decided to make the 6- or 7-mile drive from the Interstate down to the village of Van Meter. The Museum is in a brick building with a huge baseball out front and a wonderful relief sculpture on the side of the building. It appears that in addition to housing the museum the building is also used as the Town Hall. The fellow I encountered didn’t seem too friendly toward museum visitors. But that aside the museum has a large collection artifacts relating to the man known as “Rapid Robert.” While the museum is small it is packed with some of the Hall of Famers personal and baseball related possessions. Because I am a reader, I ended up spending a little more than an hour at this museum. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A visit to the museum is well worth the $5.00 admission.
MoreIf you are a fan of baseball history, this is a very good place to visit. It's small and is in City Hall. Lots of pictures and memorabilia. Great tribute to Hall of Famer and local boy makes good. Can see it all in 15 to 20 minutes unless you read every article and look in depth at each exhibit. Only 17 year old regular starting pitcher in baseball. Rookie in 1936, same year as Joe DiMaggio, and retired in early 1950s.
MoreI am a big fan of Bob Feller and when we knew we were going to be not to far from Van Meter, we knew we had to come here. My rating of 4 is based on being a fan, being a baseball fan and being close by. The exhibit is in the town hall, and isn’t huge. Still, it’s a great collection of Bob Feller items and is worth checking out if you are within 30 minuets or so. Enjoyed the spot and it was a fun time to see the history. Took about 20 minutes or so while inside.
MoreOff interstate 80. Nice small museum for the greatest Cleveland Indian player. The story of a great talent from a tiny Iowa town. Drive around the town to take in rural Iowa. The Van Meter City Hall moved into part of the museum. It is free.
MoreBob Feller was one of the best pitchers ever. He played for the Cleveland Indians. I am older and my Dad saw him play when he was a boy. It is small, but for a fan an invaluable experience . When you are coming into town, it is on your right.
