Sterling North Society Historical Museum

Sterling North Home and Museum is the restored childhood home of its namesake author who was best known for his children's book, Rascal. Adorned with period decor, the house was the setting of his classic book. It also features many family photos and artifacts. The home was in neglect for several years before it was renovated by a local non profit organization who wanted to preserve the historic house. It opened its doors in 1997 and welcomes everyone on Sunday afternoons from April to December.

You will learn about world famous naturalist and writer Sterling North. The exhibits about the book Rascal are appealing to adults and children. I enjoyed the movie about Sterling North and his love of animals. Volunteer Betty Leonard gave us an excellent tour. The admission prices are very reasonable: $3 for students and $5 for adults.

My niece from Wisconsin and I visited the Sterling North house in July. The docent gave us a recorded device to listen to as we took a self guided tour of the house. Very enjoyable and interesting. The docent was available to answer questions and elaborate on things. Nice exhibit on the Japanese fascination with Rascal. My memory of Rascal was the movie on The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights back in the day. I had no idea the author was from Wisconsin and his childhood home was so close to Madison. Sterling North had an interesting life and Edgerton is a nice little town. The house has a nice gift shop. My niece (a teacher) bought copies of Rascal for her classroom to use as educational tools.

It is difficult for me to imagine a more inspiring, educational, and joyful time than the few hours spent in the enchanting Sterling North Museum in Edgerton. Every item in and around this sweet and quiet place, everything from actual Sterling North artifacts (including some “choice words” to Kaiser Wilhelm carved into the carriage house wall by North himself as a lad) to binders filled with Sterling North Society minutes to period furniture, toys, and framed photos and quotes from Rascal…EVERYTHING is skillfully and lovingly curated with a deep and abiding respect for the author and his exquisite tales. The home is quaint and artfully restored, with every corner filled with richly-deserved reverence of the author himself, and, of course, RACOONS! The museum whispers Sterling North’s words, ones our world needs now more than ever. Simple (but not easy) things; things like courage, creativity, industriousness, and the love and respect of our fellow creatures, make us better. That message comes shining through. If you’ve never read Rascal or visited this engaging place, do yourself a favor. The time, ever fleeting, is now.
