tripadvisorA friend and I met for a weekend together in Baraboo. We had just arrived and had a nice lunch in town and saw that a movie we were interested in was playing at the historic theatre. We walked to this office next door that was selling tickets and inquired about the show time , unfortunately we were unable to go to the movie due to timing. But this office was open to the theatre lobby which looked gorgeous. I asked if I could peak in as it was open. The youngest of the three women explained to me that they give tours and one started soon but we were booked at another toor so we couldn’t attend that either . The younger of the three women walked with me into the theatre lobby and showed me a picture of the theatre interior. The photo of the theatre looked wonderful and I would have considered returning for a tour since I like old theaters. However my friend had hung back and stood near the front desk where the woman behind the desk said “ that happens sometimes” to another woman who rudely said” well I would have had a different answer “( about me peeking into the lobby). This was right in front of my friend who was offended at her response . It seemed she assumed I was trying to get something for nothing . I looked for less than 2 minutes and as we headed out they asked if we were from Baraboo which should have been obvious that we were tourists. After we left my friend told me what they said about me- terrible customer service - and what could have been an interesting activity to do upon our return will never be due to the rude service . Beware - these will be your tour guides.
MoreA hidden gem in rural Wisconsin. Well worth the time to see a bit of history lovingly restored. If there is a performance utilizing the in house theater organ, don't miss it.
MoreThe TripAdvisor listing currently says that tours are on hold, but that is not correct. If you are in the area, you must take a tour of this spectacular theater. It is probably one of the most beautiful old theaters that I have ever seen. It has been fully restored and gleams like an ornate gold jewelry box. Unlike most 100+ year old theaters, much of the Ringling is original ... the cotton velvet curtains, the plaster light fixtures, the fire curtain on the stage, and more. The Barton organ is almost 100 years old and was a highlight of our visit to the theater. Our guide was knowledgeable and gave us a great tour. Don't miss this gem.
MoreThis place is a class act. We have been to (and played in) concerts here, but this was our first movie experience. A wonderful Buster Keaton comedy (Sherlock Jr.) accompanied by an excellent organist gave us a delightful date night experience. The restoration of the theater was done loveingly and thoughtfully. It's a premier venue in a great Wisconsin town. Volunteers were helpful and enthusiastic. Concessions were great. Q&A with organist afterwards was terrific. It's just a short drive from Madison people! Give it a try.
MoreAbsolutely incredible. Your admission fee is well worth it and goes back to support the nonprofit keeping this gem updated and functioning! We stumbled upon this tour (1:30 p.m. most days) and were completely blown away. The theater is spectacular - the history, the backstage, the organ! Everything was wonderful and Bobbie, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. What a treat! This is a must-see in Baraboo.
