At the meeting point of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers is a weathered steel statue by American Indian sculptor, Blackbear Bosin. The Keeper of the Plains was installed in 1974 to celebrate the nation's bicentennial. Standing tall at 44 feet (13.41 meters), it is set on a huge headland and is considered a sacred site by the Native American tribes. Encircling it is a plaza with many displays, describing the lives of local American Indians who dwelt here. There are walking bridges to access the area. Fire drums on bluffs at the foot of the sculpture light almost every night, giving a dramatic effect to its surroundings.

tripadvisorMust see when in Wichita! This iconic landmark with historical informations and a great walking path is a must visit!
MoreOne of the outstanding statues/monuments not only in Wichita, or in Kansas, but in the US. Spectacular 44 foot statue at the confluence of 2 rivers in Wichita. Along with the statue there are displays about Plains Indians. This is a free, remarkable, place that deserves the widest possible viewing. At night, it's lit up for 15 minutes. Unforgettable.
MoreThere isn't a lot to this, but it is a very impressive monument at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. The sculpture itself is quite striking, and around the base there are plaques and explanations of important aspects of Plains Indian culture. Good for a hike down the river on a nice day, but don't plan on spending a lot of time here.
MoreSo nostalgic to be back where I spent my medical school years. The Keeper of the Plains is still as breathtaking and peaceful as ever. Always a special place in my heart.
MoreThe American Landmark Keeper of the Plains was created in 1974 and later was added as an American Cultural Landmark for the 1976 Bicentennial. The Keeper of the Plains Plaza was created in 2007 by the City of Wichita water district along with the 2 suspension bridges leading to it. Must see for all Wichita visitors.
