Providence Aikikai offers classes in the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a unique martial art that emphasizes harmonizing with the energy of the attacker and redirecting that energy to neutralize the attack. Aikido has no competitions or tournaments. Instead, students practice cooperatively alternating roles of attacker and defender in order to master its complex techniques. We are also fortunate to have a direct lineage to O-Sensei, the Founder of Aikido, through the late Kanai Sensei (one of O-Sensei's last uchi deshi or live-in apprentices). Our chief instructor, David Halprin, Shihan (7th Dan) was a long time student of Kanai Sensei. We also plan to offer classes in Iaido, the classical art of Japanese swordsmanship.
