tripadvisorGranger Lake is an US Army Corps of Engineers lake that was constructed between 1972-77, by damming the North Fork of the San Gabriel River near Granger, Texas. Today visitors can enjoy fishing in the reservoir as well as below the dam. There is decent hiking and campgrounds on the south side of the lake as well. I recently followed the Comanche Bluff Trail starting at Taylor Park and enjoyed the lakeside woodlands, seeing native trees, plants and a handful of does as well as the two historic Hoxie & Friendship bridges that were relocated to this trail. You'll find the path has a bit of up and down but nothing difficult or outside the ability of families with young children. Seems a good trail for dog walkers as well. If having rained recently, best to bring proper walking shoes that can stand to get a bit of mud on them.
MoreThis nearby place was always on my radar but always put off as Meh. But finding myself without a state park pass this weekend I decided to give it a try. I entered through the Comanche Bluff trailhead. Being in the black land prairie I was expecting a flat hike but there was a surprising amount of elevation gain during the hike. The trail traces the bluffs along to lake out to the primitive campground on the San Gabriel River. Once there I turned around and went the other direction to Taylor Park. This was a surprising good and scenic trail. Well maintained.
MoreWhat a Great Lake, not over crowded and peaceful. Will definitely come back here again. Next time I will bring friends and a picnic
Morevery peaceful place to go hiking, and kayaking. most persons have good manners on the lake, and on the trails whom we come across. nice day to just enjoy nature. facilties are for the most part clean, and the ranger regulary patrols the area. we enjoy coming here, and bringing guests from out of town. during off season, there is no fee to enter the park.
MoreThe camping spots accommodate RVs or tents. Each has a picnic table with cover and a grill. There are a few screened shelters. All have nice level pads with water and electric. Spaces are much bigger than many parks. The holding tank dump slopes away from the road, so tanks drain better if your rig is facing into the park rather than towards the entrance/exit. The fees are very reasonable and Senior National Park Pass gets you 1/2 priced camping. The boat ramp can be a bit congested on weekends, but it wasn't too bad any of the times we've been there. The park attracts northerners for extended stays during the winter. Many of the camping spots can be reserved online, but the park maintains some camping spots for first-come. The restrooms have always been in good shape.
