tripadvisorIt's as if there were two businesses operating in the one space. One, a spunky, fun local bookstore run by helpful, polite staff, and the other an inconvenient, unpleasant book buying operation run by a troll who resents all potential customers and treats them accordingly. As readers, we value having a local (if non-centrally located) venue for both buying and selling books, but over time, we've come to recognize that doing business here is not really to our advantage. Sad, but real.
MoreThe bookstore has a very large inventory and is set up a lot like a library space - lots of parallel shelving. You can browse here for quite a while. I pick up my Sunday NYT here every week.
MoreThis was my go-to for years. Their used book store was my once a week high point. Alas, they lost the lease (or couldn't afford it), consolidated the used with the old, and moved. The store simply doesn't have the inventory it used to carry and also has a lot of non-book items. It is still a good place to try for used books that are in good condition, but they just don't get the volume of titles they once had. It is good to be able to call and see if they have a title. The staff is minimal now because the store is so small. I will go as long as they are here, but I wish they had been able to stay as they had been.
MoreI've been a patron of Page One since 1995, and I wholeheartedly support local bookstores. I'm therefore sad to say that I've lost faith in this store. I recently offered a number of used books for their consideration, and they rejected all but one - certainly their prerogative, not all used books are going to be worthwhile for them. What rankles me is that I was offered $2 for a book currently offered on AbeBooks for $35-40, with the explanation that they would sell it for $4. So either the buyer doesn't bother to check AbeBooks or they were not completely honest with me. I'd rather donate the book to the ABQ library and let them sell it for $4. Or $2.
MoreI drove over from Santa Fe to buy several (5) books on how to build a house. When I got back to SF, I discovered two of the were the very similar. But when went back there to return one of them a few days later, the cashier told me they would not give me a refund, and she accused me of having read the book and that I was trying to rip them off! WOW! What an insult on top of refusing to accept my return. What a policy, to turn a simple mistake into an insulting accusation of a scam! NEVER, EVER AGAIN WILL I GO THERE!
