tripadvisorThere are more than a dozen bridges in St.Paul, some very unique, including the High Bridge. The original bridge, built in 1889, was damaged by a storm in 1904. The southernmost five spans were rebuilt, and then reconstructed in 1987, using iron from the old bridge. I lived in St. Paul up to age 15, so viewed and crossed this bridge many times. It was rumored, many of the suicides from the old bridge, were actually people killed by the Mafia, powerful in those early days. The Colorado Street Bridge, a false skew arch designed in 1888, is now a pedestrian only, bridge, well worth a visit. The Nat'l Historic Register, Ford Parkway Bridge, built 1025-7, is one of the monumental concrete rib-arch bridges spanning the high river bluffs along the Mississippi River, along with the Franklin Avenue Bridge, the Third Avenue Bridge, the 10th Avenue Bridge, and the Robert Street Bridge' per Wikipedia. The Fort Road Bridge is a girder bridge that spans the Mississippi River between St. Paul and Fort Snelling, originally built in 1880 and rebuilt in 1912 and 1960. The Wabasha Street bridge was an iron cantilever deck-truss bridge, built in 1889, a rare architectural design. Sadly, deemed unsafe, was replaced in 2002 by a interesting dual segmental bridges. (Length of visit <1 hour, each)
