St. Mary Basilica
Cathedral of Saint Paul Catholic Church

One of the country's largest and most spectacular churches, the Cathedral of St. Paul sits high on a hill (aptly known as Cathedral Hill) overlooking downtown and the Mississippi River Valley. The structure opened in 1915, although extensive interior work continued for several more years. The massive copper dome is 300 feet above the nave's floor and the walls are covered in pale Minnesota granite. A pair of carillon towers flanks the building's Summit Avenue façade and the sanctuary seats 3000 worshipers. Guided tours are offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1p.

It is a beautiful cathedral and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. The outside is stunning and the inside is even more spectacular.

Beautiful & breathtaking. You can see it from the distances in the city. I didn’t do an inside tour but enjoyed photographing from the outside! So beautiful!

It may look imposing and cold stone on outside but is warm and sacred space inside. Beautiful pieta modeled after Michelangelo’s is just inside on right. Attended 8am mass on Sat to experience why this place was built - to worship God.

This impressive cathedral sits high over Saint Paul. For a full tourist experience, I suggest you take a guided tour. Tours are available at 1 pm on certain weekdays. Check the schedule online. The tour lasts about an hour. We were among the 20 on the tour, so it is popular. There is a suggested admission price of $10 a person for the tour--consider it a donation to the upkeep of this massive building. The guide on this occasion was very knowledgeable about the building, and spent a great deal of time discussing the context for the construction. The tour will add meaning to your visit.
