Castle Otttis Castle

Castle Otttis was constructed as a landscape-sculpture in the city of St. Augustine. It resembles an Irish castle with the interiors designed by renowned historians of Northeast Florida. It elicits the atmosphere of an abbey and is often used for wedding ceremonies and functions by the locals.

We had a very enjoyable tour of the castle yesterday. We were totally unprepared for the inside. The workmanship of all the wood inside was very impressive. The owners say this was not built as a home, but more as a work of art. It was very impressive to think Two men did this all on their own. Even though it’s all stairs, it’s very easy. We had a young child with us and it was no problem as tour is short (45 minutes). You can’t just show up; it’s closed . You do have to be patient getting a tour as it took some time to get emails answered and confirmed .We finished off with dinner at “caps” just down the street.!

Just about 10 minutes north outside of historic St. Augustine is a unique castle that sits back from the main road among trees and hedges. Sadly, the owner and creator of Castle Otttis, Kendle Icke, passed away in July 2023. However, his son, who lives on the property does conduct tours for small groups of people who have reservations. His tours are very interesting with information on how the castle came to be. Apparently, Mr. Icke had a couple of dreams about a castle in great detail, which he shared with a builder friend of his. The friend encouraged him to build it and agreed to help him. They were able to get donated building materials to work with. Mr. Icke built the castle in the image of old castles in Ireland and dedicated it to his wife. Castle Ottis was built between 1984-1988. The Ickes also had a home on the property to the left of the castle. We took the tour with a small group of people, which worked out very well. There are 3 levels if you count the rooftop, where you will see gorgeous panoramic views of the ocean. This is a castle based on 1000 year old Irish castles. The tour is free but donations will be greatly appreciated. A must see if you are in St. Augustine. It is a magical experience. There are special events held at the castle, like weddings or anniversaries. It is also great for photography opportunities. This is a one of a kind opportunity. Please note that Castle Otttis does not have handicapped accessibility. Parking is available on the property for the guests. You are allowed to take pictures inside the castle.

A landscape abstract impression sculpture family owned & operated built from what can only be described as love-that you can walk through via tour/private tour of the Otttis Castle. This Castle supports a non denominational Christain church service on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The origin story is the most fascinating story. No food drink gum or children under 9 years old. An absolute GEM of St Augustine must not miss this local treasure. Free tours, budget 1hour.

Would not generally recommend this place there was no way to get in. We were unable to visit, but it does have a very interesting history. We were drawn to the look and the details about this sweet looking castle. We did go there and get a picture I guess there are times you can visit, but we were unable to sadly…

When I saw the review that said it was a waste of time because it was closed and no parking I thought he was just a grump. Then I read how wonderful it was and was free before noon and many other reviews. So we decided to go there on our way to Beaufort, SC. The grump was right, no parking, so much foliage around you could not see anything, but the top 6 to 8 feet. If you are going to advertise it you should give real information.
