We made an appointment online for a Saturday morning when they first opened & were the only ones there. The exhibit was small but nicely laid out. The gallery is located at the university but there were a few free museum parking spots up front in the lot. Admission was free to the gallery also.

I was out at on the University of Houston campus for several meetings and started and ended at Blaffer Gallery to see the Propeller Group exhibit. (This group is an artist collective from Ho Chi MInh City, Vietnam.) The Blaffer team made sure I could park in one of the spots reserved for the art gallery (thank you!). As school had just started, this was GREATLY appreciated. I first cruised through the exhibit downstairs. There were several things on display that play into the video (big screen) which is played in a room where you can sit down, so look at them first. There is also another video downstairs that was about a Honda Dream Motorcycle. Look at the sculpture beside the screen where the video is being displayed, and then watch the video, more than once. I won't give it away, but it was very interesting. Several of us watched it together, and you all see different things due to the rapid nature of the video. Watch it several times as you will continue to see things you did not see the first time, nor the second. Then you will fully understand the sculpture. The video that is being played in a room where you can sit down is called The Living Need Light, the Dead Need Music. When I first watched it, I went in very blindly, only having seen the pieces in the other room. Then, I learned what is was really all about and went and watched it again. Upstairs, they have some really fascinating ballistic gel blocks in which a bullet is shot into the end of the block from both ends, one with an AK47 and another with an M16. The bullets collide in the center. (I wonder how many times it took to get them to collide?) What the stream of the bullets create as they are on their path to collision, plus what the collision creates within the gel blocks is really amazing. When I entered the room, there was a docent (who was a student major in hotel and restaurant management, but was also an artist) who knew a lot about what I was about to see, and he shared that information with me. (Thank you again, Blaffer.)

On the University of Houston campus just off Cullen Blvd. Great two-floor space: high ceilings, white walls, polished concrete floors, lots of natural light. No permanent collection so exhibits come and go. Currently, the first floor hosts Cabin of the Accused by Blake Rayne which includes 30 works - paintings, sculptures, prints, and installations. Plenty of space between pieces. The gallery is a joy to be in. Parking is free in the big lot just across the street (park in the spaces closest to the gallery and they will validate). Worth a visit.

Although the exhibit we were looking for (50 States) turned out to not be at this gallery on the UH campus, the staff were very attentive and tried their best to help us find what we were looking for.We parked conveniently right across the street. Were greeted at the door and by a young lady at the desk.

The Bluffer Gallery has amazing art on every wall. It's a great place to get a way and enjoy some of Houston's finest.
