tripadvisorNever been there but looks pretty good though if I'm.being honest they could change the way the building faces outwards and point it up, instead. Also, could change the address to an easier one IMHO.
MoreThere's a reason why the oddly colored Gaylord Building was constructed in downtown Lockport, Illinois, in 1838. Built of yellow limestone, a common construction material in north central Illinois in those days, it played a pivotal role in the construction of the adjacent Illinois and Michigan Canal, which was begun in 1836 and completed in 1848, spanned 96 miles, and was the last link in a waterway connecting the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico via the Port of New Orleans and the Atlantic Ocean via the Port of New York. Lockport, situated about 1/3 of the way from the starting point (Bridgeport in Chicago on the Chicago River) and the end point (La Salle on the Illinois River) was a natural location for canal planning, staging and warehousing operations. So I&M officials constructed the Gaylord Building at 200 West 8th Street to serve as their headquarters. A three-story Italianate addition was added in 1859. Today, as part of the Lockport Historic District, the building has been restored to its 1859 appearance. Opened to the public in 1987, the museum features canal exhibits and offers tours and educational programs. Public Landing, a popular restaurant, also is located on the property. The canal trail runs past the building along the old canal towpath, leading visitors to other parts of historic downtown Lockport. The Gaylord Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
MoreToday we visited the Gaylord Building in Lockport, taking in both the museum and the Public Landing restaurant (same building). Both were excellent. The museum is smaller but the displays are very professional and provide good insight into the history of the area and the I & M canal. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. Since the weather was nice we were able to sit outdoors. Really nice outdoor seating area. Food was well prepared, reasonably priced, and the our server (Rachel) did a fantastic job.
MoreSuch history all in one place!! And has one of the best restaurants in town!!! Public Landing Restaurant is amazing and has a great view and walking area of the historic canal.
MoreOur first visit to the Gaylord Building was for a Limestone Stage production upstairs. I must say we were very impressed with the restored building and grounds. Felt like history just permerated from the limestone walls, and the art gallery on the 3rd floor a very nice setting. Hope for continued success for this gem of a location. Lockport should be proud !
