The privilege of designing this building was awarded to the winners of a design competition held by the Chicago Tribune itself. The firm of Hood and Howell won, and in 1922 they erected this looming tower to house the publication. It looks out over the river and into the growing boom of Michigan Avenue. Most people overlook the stones embedded around the lower walls on all sides of the tower. The stones were collected from around the world, from the Alamo to Chartes Cathedral.

tripadvisorA truly magnificent building standing in the midst of numerous glass towers showing off its class. No longer home of the tribune but looking magnificent all the same. There is a collection of rocks in the foyer from many countries/buildings, though I couldn’t get to see them. Well worth some time just to see the outside.
MoreIconic part of of the downtown and skyline. Disclosure - didn't go inside, but it's a picturesque building in amongst the modern tower blocks
MoreBeing a lifelong Chicagoan, I honestly never thought I'd see the day the Chicago Tribune left Tribune Tower, but here we are. This iconic 468-foot, 36-floor art deco and neo-Gothic skyscraper at 435 North Michigan Avenue, right at the south end of the Magnificent Mile, was built between 1922 and 1925 to be the most beautiful building in the world, and it totally delivers. It's now been converted into 162 absolutely stunning luxury condos, but so much of the history remains. Inside the lobby you can read famous quotes about freedom of the press carved into the walls, and the exterior is truly incredible, with 149 stones embedded from places like the Parthenon, Notre Dame, the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal, the Alamo and even a rock from the Moon. Walking around and spotting each one was such a very memorable experiance. If you love architecture and history, this landmark is an absolute must-see. Five stars without hesitation.
MoreThis building is located the heart of the city. If you take a river cruise tour, this will likely to be your starting point. If you show up too early, just walk a bit to check out this building
MoreA classic skyscraper with a design from the early era of high-rises. You will find it along the Chicago River where it is a landmark. Good views of the building from the bridges that cross the river.
