tripadvisorThis historic bakery still bakes with wood-fired ovens, just like they did in 1800. Costumed interpreters were very nice as they explained baking during that time. The biggest seller is their sugar cake, or carrot walnut loaf, but they also sell wonderful mixes for baking it yourself.
MoreLove this place in Old Salem!! Winkler bakery features home made moravian baked goods. The bakery not sells baked goods but also pottery made in Salem as well as other gift items. There are benches and tables outside so you can sit and enjoy your baked goods. Highly recommend a stop here.
MoreThis is not a bakery in which you'll go in, peruse the goodies freshly baked on the counter, pick out a muffin, and grab ya a cup of coffee. This is the kind of bakery where you buy stuff to take home, already wrapped in plastic.Good variety - moravian cookies, different strudels, banana bread, nut breads...small building and can get claustrophic.
MoreWe stopped here before checking into our B&B. So many goodies to choose from ! Truly a delightful visit! Cinnamon buns were still warm. We had one once we checked in and it was so good!
MoreWe live on the coast of N.C. while my Uncle lived in Winston Salem when I was young. Christmas wasn't Christmas without the Sugar Bread Christmas morning. Eating the lovely taste of just enough sugar,a simple spice & bread saturated with butter, the only quiet time on Christmas Day. During the Christmas holidays. Over the years I often closed my eyes savoring the unique taste that only comes from Winston Bakeries in my mind. Decades went by but memories of my family eating the warm bread was the ONLY quiet time as we ate this hand made Sugar Bread. Several years ago thinking of my Uncle now retired living in Bonita Springs Florida, a thought came to mind. I think I can go online & purchase the Sugar Bread for his Christmas gift. I ordered it for him as well as for my family. MY Uncle called with what I call a twinkling delightful surprised voice saying how on earth did you remember the Sugar Bread from Old Salem? I don't know if he was more delighted that I remembered him bring trays of Sugar Bread home or having the warm Bread for his Floridian Christmas morning breakfast. I will continue to gift him with this staple from Old Salem's bakery & keep the tradition eating the Sugar Bread with my family. Thank you all for the hard work & long hours during the months of November & December!
