Though the Cathedral Basilica's Romanesque exterior is undoubtedly impressive, the interior of the cathedral is what is truly inspiring. The seat of the Catholic archdiocese in St. Louis, this massive complex contains a mosaic collection that is said to be the world's largest. Over the course of 76 years, 41.5 million pieces of glass tesserae were affixed to the walls and ceiling to illustrate numerous religious stories. The life story of King St. Louis IX, the city's namesake, is told in mosaic on the walls of the portico. Choir concerts are scheduled throughout the year, and choral programs and organ recitals take place on most Sunday afternoons. Check the website for more details.

MoreMy wife had suggested to stop by here to see the church. I will freely admit that I was not excited about it. I have seen several churches both in the United States and in Europe. Another church was not really my idea of sightseeing in St Louis. I am happy to admit I was wrong. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is an impressive landmark in the Central West End. The exterior is solid Romanesque-style, but step inside and you’re hit with one of the most stunning collections of mosaics I’ve seen. There is a small parking in the back of the church and street parking. It is free to enter but please be respectful of others and the signage of where/when you can go and where they allow pictures inside. The walls and ceilings of this massive church are covered with over 41 million tiny pieces covering the walls and domes in incredible detail. Construction started in 1907 and the main structure was completed in 1914, though the mosaics took decades longer to finish. It’s peaceful, well-maintained, and worth a visit whether you’re religious or just appreciate grand architecture and craftsmanship. They offer tours and there is a small museum if you want the full history. I highly recommend that you visit this church when you’re in St. Louis.
Moreliving in St Louis all my life I have attended my events at this Basilica. Finally took a tour and was actually able to see and enjoy the beautiful mosaics. The largest collection of mosaics in the USA. The one hour docent lead tour is well worth the stop. You actually get up close to many areas otherwise restricted. Be sure to go downstair to the museum. The museum explains the process of the works.
