Maples Repertory Theater Theater

Maples Repertory Theatre, North Missouri's Professional theatre is located in Macon, a town of 5500. In 2004, the theatre opened its first season of three shows. Five years later, the current season includes six full-scale productions, two cabaret concerts, and a series of small "Afterglow" cabarets. This amazing growth, according to Artistic Director Todd Davison, is due to the support of theatre lovers from across the region. "No one really expects a town the size of Macon to support professional theatre, " Davison says. "We are proving that great theatre is valued by people even if they don't live in a metropolitan area." The Macon area has a strong history of live theatre having supported the local community theater group for over 30 years. Even before that, touring theatre and oprea companies made regular stops in Macon going back into the 1800's. When Maples Rep opened, giving patrons a chance to see modern professional theatre, many embraced the company immediately. In the next few years, as more people learned about Maples Rep, audiences grew. A ten-year renovation project on the historic Royal Theatre ( circa 1889 ) has provided an excellent facility in which to experience live theatre in an intimate setting: a large lobby ( which doubles as a banquet hall and party room, complete with full kitchen ) paired with a handicapped-accessible, 336-seat theatre.

I thank my lucky stars every year when the Maples Repertory Theatre season begins again. I can’t believe there’s professional theater this good, this consistent, this convenient, this affordable practically in my backyard. I’m a long-term season ticket holder for a reason. They’ve spoiled me! Now when I go see professional live theater in big cities I want the impossible – I want what I get a MRT -- to sit 50 feet from the stage, see a creative theatrical production, have homemade dessert at intermission, spend nearly no time waiting in line in their huge bathroom, and have $$ leftover for dinner. My favorite production so far this season has been Clue: On Stage. What a terrific production – huge cast of crazy characters coming and going out of more doors than I’ve ever seen on stage at once before. Was it Mrs. Peacock or Professor Plum in the Kitchen with the Knife? Ha! Great set, great costumes and AMAZING performances, as usual! I can highly recommend attending one of their productions in the beautiful Royal Theatre if you ever get the chance.

What a hidden treasure in Northeast Missouri! The shows are amazing, the theatre is beautiful, and The Boots & Black Tie fundraiser in June is such a fun time. If you are in the area, see one of these shows! Live, professional theater at a great price. You can't beat it.

Attending shows here since 2005. Has grown into an amazing place to enjoy live theater in a tiny town. Top notch venue, worth the drive, the time invested.

Maples Repertory Theatre in historic downtown Macon, MO is a one of the best attractions in North East Missouri! I have been to multiple shows over the last four years, and have never been disappointed. Professional theatre with quality cast and crews on every production, at a fraction of the cost! Last season's production of Steel Magnolias was phenomenal, and looking forward to Rock of Ages, which opens in a few weeks.
