Red Star Studio regularly exhibits work, mostly ceramics, by local and regional craftsmen. It is a relatively new gallery space and the quality of the work is consistently good to excellent. The staff does an excellent job of arranging the exhibits. Prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the work on sale.

This is a somewhat hidden gem. I attended their Christmas open house and found some wonderful items made by studio ceramicists. The gallery space had some incredible items for viewing and for sale. I understand that they show case both local and out of state artists on a regular basis. Off the main gallery is a small shop that is open year round where various pieces can be purchased. Very friendly staff who are not obtrusive but rather very helpful.

Apparently this is a new ceramics studio with a print studio above. I was brought by an angel tour guide from the Belger Arts Center, but assume that access is fairly simple so long as you check ahead for gallery times. You walk through a great ceramic studio facility into a large gallery space. I was there for the Ceramic Top 40 which featured contemporary ceramics from across the world. And it was a world class show. This show will be there into January and anyone reading this who even has a vague art interest should make their way there. Even if you know nothing about ceramics you should go, just to see the ideas being grappled with by those determined to work in a very difficult medium. I am also willing to bet that after such a great show, others will follow. And some of the artists on display were actually from Kansas City which shows that the Art Institute has kept its edge on the ceramics world. There were also some pieces on sale when I was there. Upstairs is an established print studio with a gallery space and a sales area. Again, some internationally famous work was on display. The surprises just kept coming. So add this facility to your visit. Go to the Nelson Atkins (zzz). The Kemper, then come here and the Belger Arts Center.

If you've ever wanted to do that scene from Ghost, where somebody really hot stands behind you and guides your hands through the motions of making a passionately created masterpiece...well, this isn't that. However, Meredith is a wonderful, skilled, and patient teacher who makes it all fun, and helps it make sense. I got the deal on Groupon, for myself and a friend, and may even get a few pieces to come out at the end fully intact. Always wanted to try some pottery, and this is the best way I can imagine learning. They have many kinds of classes for all ages and abilities, as well as lovely gallery of finished pieces for sale by local artists.
