If not a federal employee or in the military then go to visitor center. It is a driving tour of the post. Some interesting stops.

My husband and I visited our military family at Ft. Leavenworth and took in all of the historic areas of the fort. It’s history takes us back to days of the beginnings of westward expansion. The stories of wagon trains, Buffalo Soldiers, Lewis and Clark all involve this place. The historic areas are charming, with soldiers’ families still living in these big, old homes. As with many of our military installations, history is alive.

A trip to Leavenworth is like taking a trip to a quaint village in Germany. The town is surrounded by mountains and is beautiful during each season. The Christmas Lighting Ceremony is repeated each night and tourists flock to see it and share in the festivities. If you go by bus be aware within moments of the lighting you will be told you have 10 minutes to return to your bus. They all leave at the same time so if you want to linger it is best to drive your own vehicle.I recommend planning way ahead and booking an overnight stay so you have a place to warm up, rest up and can take in the many shops and restaurants.A third option is to take the train. It stops outside of town and passengers have to get on a bus to get into town. If you choose not to carry everything you brought and want to leave it on the train it will not be secure. There is usually snow on the ground and the night air gets really cold. Make sure to cover your head and ears and warm boots to keep your feet warm and you will have a magical experience.Expect crowded restaurants, that's part of the fun adventure. You might also want to visit during Oktoberfest Fest. The mountains are glorious in their fall dress.

This historic fort is absolutely stunning! The check-in at the visitor's center was quick and simple to get a pass to access the fort. There is a lot of history here and it is well worth the visit if you're in the Leavenworth area.

This is a free, self-guided tour. It takes the visitor to many important historical sites at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Each marker has a recorded message that explains the historical significance of each stop. If the visitor doesn’t want to spend time listening to each recording, the map gives an explanation. Stops include the Frontier Army Museum, the Command and General Staff College, a scenic view of the Missouri River, several historic houses, the Memorial Chapel (built in 1876), Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, the Buffalo Soldiers Monument (dedicated to African-American soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments), and three pieces of the Berlin Wall. My husband and I found it to be enjoyable, educational, and inspirational. Highly recommended. One bit of advice: when entering at the main gate, be sure you get into the far right lane. Traffic was a bit backed up the day we were there, and by the time we saw the sign it was too late. The guard was very polite and allowed us to turn around, but it was very embarrassing.
