YOTEL NEW YORK: THE WORST HOTEL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. STAY AWAY!I’ve traveled extensively, stayed in countless hotels around the world, and I can say without hesitation that YOTEL New York Times Square is one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had.Where do I even begin?Let’s start with their brilliant concept of “automation,” which supposedly allows them to operate more efficiently and offer lower prices. Sounds great, right? Except NONE OF IT WAS WORKING.Instead, I arrived to find approximately 25 other miserable guests waiting in line while the staff attempted to check everyone in manually. TWO HOURS. TWO HOURS TO CHECK INTO A HOTEL. Apparently, when your entire business model revolves around automation, having a backup plan is just too much to ask. After finally getting my room, things somehow managed to get worse. The room is microscopic. Now, I understand this is New York City, and I’m perfectly willing to accept a small room. But apparently, at YOTEL, small also means dark, poorly equipped, and unpleasant. There’s barely any lighting. The room smells bad. There’s no refrigerator. No safe. And the bed? Every single time I move, it squeaks like a rusty amusement park ride. Forget getting a decent night’s sleep unless you plan to lie perfectly motionless until morning. And here’s my personal favorite: My room has a door leading directly outside to a patio area associated with a restaurant. Nothing says “security and privacy” quite like having a door connecting your hotel room to an outdoor public dining area. On the bright side, I suppose I’ve got an emergency exit if the building catches fire. But wait. It gets better.I booked through Priceline because YOTEL appeared to offer one of the lowest rates in the area.SURPRISE!Upon arrival, I discovered an additional $50 PER DAY RESORT FEE.RESORT FEE???I’m sorry, did I accidentally check into the Four Seasons in Maui? What exactly is the resort experience here? The two-hour check-in line? The malfunctioning technology? The squeaking bed? The questionable smell? The room that barely has enough light to find your luggage?Charging a resort fee for this experience is beyond insulting. It’s almost impressive how much they manage to charge for providing so little. The entire concept seems to be built around cutting costs, eliminating amenities, and convincing guests that they’re experiencing some innovative, futuristic approach to hospitality. They’re not. They’re experiencing a budget hotel with a clever marketing department and an extraordinarily generous definition of the word “resort.”My advice? STAY ANYWHERE ELSE.Pay a little more. Pay a lot more. Sleep in a broom closet at another hotel. At least you might get a decent mattress and a functioning check-in process.YOTEL has somehow managed to combine the inconvenience of outdated technology, the comfort of a storage closet, and the pricing creativity of a luxury resort.Congratulations, YOTEL. You’ve officially earned the distinction of being the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in.Never again.ONE STAR. And that’s only because zero stars isn’t an option.

I wouldn’t stay here again. The air conditioning didn’t work, the check-in system was down, and no staff were on site to help. Our room issue was never fixed, and the hotel refused to give us a refund. I spent hours on emails, phone calls, and an in-person visit, and got nowhere. Vikram J., a Guest Assistance Specialist, also turned down my refund request. I’ve filed complaints with the BBB and my credit card company. Save yourself the hassle and book somewhere else

My partner kindly booked this hotel as a birthday gift for me, for which I am very grateful. However, the experience itself was extremely disappointing. The hotel is advertised as being on Times Square, yet it is at least a 10‑minute walk away — this felt misleading from the start. Check‑in was reasonably smooth, but we were then charged an additional £191, which I consider utterly unjustifiable.Upon entering our room, there was an overpowering smell of cannabis. We had to open the window immediately and use our own spray to try to clear it. While the room was reasonably spacious, it was also noticeably dated. There were visible stains on the bedside table, desk, and the side of the bed. The TV remote was non‑functional, so we were unable to watch television at all.The door to the shower and toilet area was extremely stiff — almost as if it needed regular use just to operate — and the shower floor covering was peeling away, leaving sharp, exposed edges that posed a real risk of cutting feet. Soundproofing was practically non‑existent; we could hear every word and movement from outside our door throughout the night, due to a significant gap and poor fit.At check‑out, we asked about leaving our luggage. We were told this would cost $3 per person, rising to $6 per person if kept past 15:00 — and this was strictly cash only. We had not carried cash during our trip, so we were forced to use the hotel’s ATM, which charged us a fee on top. Charging guests to store luggage — especially after spending thousands on our trip — is something we have never encountered before, and it felt highly unprofessional and suspicious, particularly the insistence on cash only. It gave the impression the money might never reach the business at all.Overall, our time in New York was wonderful, but this hotel was a major letdown and we would not stay here again. It was absolutely not worth the money paid. My partner chose it because we had stayed at a Yotel in Geneva and had an excellent experience there — this property was nowhere close to that standard.
