The Kansas African American Museum Historical Museum ·$

The Kansas African American Museum is a historical museum, dedicated to the lives, ordeals and experiences of the African-American community in the State of Kansas. The building was first built in 1917 as the Calvary Baptist Church, which was considered to be the cornerstone and an important landmark of Wichita's African-American community. In 1972, the church was relocated and the first National Black Historical Society was set up to safeguard the historical building. In 1993, the building was added to the National Register of Historical Places and by 1997, it was renamed the Kansas African American Museum. This museum is especially renowned for its annual celebrations and events, including the Cranford Village Celebration, Doris Kerr Larkins Brunch and Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

This is one of the best museums about Mid-Western African Americans I've ever attended. The exhibits are so good that they travel throughout the country... and the staff historians can explain the actual behind the scenes cultural nuances, triggering events, and scenarios that triggered the major events we've studied in African American history. As I carefully look at the photographs, descriptions, and artifacts I had so many ah-ha moments... when I realized how & why things occurred in the past. This is a must attend place.

An outstanding place to learn about the many notable black people from Wichita and a glossy overview of black history in both Wichita and Kansas. The target audience is students and those wishing to learn the basics, but I found it somewhat lacking in details of the struggle. Some hints exist, but hopefully future curation will present a more complete history. Nonetheless, this place is amazing! Highly recommended!

Exhibits change and are always interesting and informative. Great Museum staff. Have been on trips to Alabama and to D.C. with the museum staff and other members of the museum. Great people. The building is a great rental facility, too.

Obviously not well funded, but given the history of the area, it should have been engaging. Unless you have too much time on your hands, I wouldn't bother
