tripadvisorI checked before we arrived. The hours of operation were listed as 9-5. We arrived for a November visit at 2:28 to a sign that said they closed at 2 pm! We walked some of the trails. They are pretty and well-maintained, but we didn't stay long due to the lack of facilities. I was hoping to spend the afternoon enjoying this place. What a disappointment!
MoreWent on a school trip with my sons class. Loved learning about the turtles and all the many other things related to the Kansas prairies and pond.
MoreOn my trip to the Great Plains, I wanted to experience the plains and hike as many highly listed hikes as I could in my short stay. This was listed as the 20th best hike in Kansas. While I did not get to visit the center as it was already closed, I did get to hike the 1.7 mile Chisholm Creek trail. It is great to see wild habitat protected and a part of an education center. As for the trail, it was not as much plains as I had expected. However, until visiting, I did not realize the impact of the plains on birds and waterfowl. The conservation of the creek is readily apparent to the bird population as I saw herons, ducks and turkeys on this semi-suburban hike. I had expected more hike, but this is more of a city park than I realized. Still I greatly enjoyed the hike.
MoreA lovely habitat to have in the city. We got off to a bad start as we couldn’t find the visitor center due to poor signage or us being blind, not sure which. We were then given a map in black and white, with four coloured trails … maybe the colour printer was broken. For us there was far too much concrete and asphalt on the trails. The side paths to nowhere were far more interesting, especially through the woodland floor. We saw amazing turtles, heron, butterflies, different jumping fish, cardinals and all sorts of other birds we couldn’t identify. The replanted prairie was great and did remind us of our trips to the real ‘wild west’.
MoreWas here on a day they were doing a special event, so had to enter through a secondary entrance. Overall this place had amazing trails, many of which seem to be accessible. Lots of wooden bridges allow you to cross marshes and the many creeks which seem to run through here. There were a lot of birds, and I noticed several groups of birders making unusual sightings.
