Built in the 19th Century on the banks of the Mississippi River, the Louisiana Old State Capitol is today a popular museum and event venue. The building is unique in the area because of its Gothic architecture and castle-like facade. The Museum of Political History, located inside, contains information about Louisiana’s early years as a state as well as the occasional traveling exhibit.

tripadvisorGreat museum that is free! The building itself is incredible. We went here after visiting the Louisiana Art and Science Museum across the street. Unfortunately we didn’t have much time before closing and had to hurry. There is a lot more here than we expected.
MoreFREE. Great history tour. Lovely interior ceiling, genuinely looks like a castle on the outside. Fun to walk around.
MoreVisited both the old and the new capitals in Baton Rouge. This building is impressive, especially considering when it was built. The stained glass is very nice and the staircase is awesome. I enjoyed the visit but I visited the new capital first and the new capital is just and amazing building so the old capital was a little bit of a let down. If you are visiting then visit the old capital first. You will enjoy it and appreciate its beauty. Then go see the new one which will be even better. Both are worth visiting.
MoreLike the state capitol tour, the old state capitol is heavy on the Huey Long history. Very interesting and a nicely balanced presentation. Well done. Free. Other notes from LA history that are worth a stop. Parking is limited, but available. A bit confusing to get to check the lot next to the building first - otherwise parking is a challenge.
MoreStunning is not the word!! We walked in and grab the walking tour info to the left! Wonderful greeters! Took the elevator to the 2nd floor and the whole tour was amazing! We spent 2 hours here.
