Journey back to the days before the Civil War forever changed Arkansas' history. The Historic Arkansas Museum, formerly known as the Arkansas Territorial Restoration, has preserved five antebellum homes, including the area's oldest building, the 1827 Hinderliter Grog Shop. Guests enjoy a guided living-history tour through the grounds as they learn the history of each building. The museum features several Arkansas art galleries and an interactive children's gallery.

An amazing all ARKANSAS museum. It has beautiful art exhibits, lots of history with tours, a gift shop that features all Arkansas made crafts-food, jewelry, original cards, pottery, children’s gifts and more. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Don’t miss it.

We arrived at 3pm and it was still too late for an interior tour of the historic buildings. No free parking in area. The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts and MacArthur Military Museum are better choices,

Pitiful. The day we were there only 4 buildings open an only 2 of the buildings gave any true knowledge of their craft. The galleries did not interest or impress us with the quality of art. Only interest to us was the Bowie knife gallery.AR can do better than this.only

It’s rare for me to give less than 4 stars. But this was not what I was expecting. I really thought there was going to be history of the trail of tears which is why we came. Also the Heritage website is confusing so we went to the wrong place first. But the artwork was pretty and it is free to go through the museum so it wasn’t a total loss. I do appreciate all the Arkansas made art. I’d still say to visit as long as you are aware what it is. To be fair, they did appear to have a section blocked off so I wonder if they were changing out the displays.

The customer service staff at the Museum were immediately welcoming & friendly, and provided us with helpful guidance regarding the layout & content of the site before we began exploring. With less than an hour available to visit this well maintained local museum (another hour & a guided tour would have been ideal), we concentrated primarily on viewing the temporary exhibit entitled 'Future in the Making' with pieces created by faculty members of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville School of Art. Many of the works were tied to historic Arkansas people & cultural themes, and the exhibit as a whole was well curated & presented in the modern exhibit space. The pieces provided a good contrast to the Museum's collection of historic buildings on the grounds' one & a half square blocks, which a large group of school-aged children were enjoying via a tour on the morning we visited. We will keep HAM on our future leisure travel list, and look forward to returning to learn more AR history.
