The Atheneum Hotel

This swank all-suites hotel in the heart of the Greektown area is well known for its exceptional service. It resides in a perfect location for business affairs, near the General Motors headquarters at the Renaissance Center. The Atheneum's lobby is decorated with murals from Greek mythology and the Trojan War. The hotel is surrounded by trendy bistros, clubs and restaurants and one of the trendiest, Fishbone's Rhythm Café, is right on the premises. Visitors choose this spot for the nightlife, and it is also popular for romantic getaways. Families love it because the staff and policies are unusually kid-friendly.

What makes this hotel special is the staff. We found our room a little odd with the sleeping area down some steps. As other guests have commented, the bathroom only has a tub that you have to climb into with no handles in sight. This was not a problem for us but might be for other travelers. However, the staff was extraordinary, especially the hard-working van operators. Their warmth was palpable and they have a sense of humor to boot. The entire staff at the hotel was delightful. The owners should be very proud of whom they have hired.

Overall, a positive experience at a good price. I requested a quiet room, and I received a great room facing the back of the hotel.gr Despite the downtown location, it was quiet and I slept very well. The hotel design is kind of retro and ugly cute. Lobby bar is beautiful with friendly service. I appreciated the large desk / workstation and the 24/7 business center. The rooms are designed in such a way that light enters from the hotel lobby to the room’s sitting area, and from the bathroom to the bedroom. Too much glass. The service was generally warm and friendly - though I once asked the front desk for one extra set of towels, and the employee gave me a really hard time about it. I tried to explain to him I have long hair and need more towels to dry it - but it seemed he didn’t believe me and thought I was trying to sneak extra guests into my room.

Housekeeping staff does a wonderful job keeping the rooms spotless. The bartender made an excellent espresso martini. The hotel shuttle was very appreciated for providing transportation to restaurants in the vicinity. The lobby Muzak was outstanding...popular tunes played in classical style. The only negatives: (1) A/C that stopped working on two occasions due to needing a reset. Maintenance was very prompt in getting it running again. (2) There is no complimentary lobby coffee in the morning but there are Kurigs in the room with Kirkland pods. (3) No vending machines if you want soda in a can. (4) If you are built like a Detroit Lions linebacker, you'll love the huge, unyielding bed pillows. If you are a normal-sized person without broad shoulders, you should plan to make an appointment with a chiropractor or go to Target in the suburbs to buy a standard pillow (that's what we did). This was the first hotel I've stayed in where Housekeeping didn't have a standard-sized option. A bad night's sleep can ruin a vacation.

Perfect location for a Tigers game and for spending time downtown. We went with another couple and were grateful they allowed us an early check‑in. Thank you to the staff for that. The staff was excellent!! Very friendly and helpful. Our room was huge, especially considering we booked the most affordable option. We parked in the garage across the street — 19 hours was $29. The room did have a smoke detector chirping, but it was only noticeable in the living room area. Thankfully, the bedroom had a door that closed it off. We did hear quite a bit of noise from the People Mover at night. We were on the 6th floor, room 709, so I’d recommend bringing a noise machine and ear plugs. The in‑room coffee maker and fridge were nice conveniences. Overall, great location and spacious rooms, but be prepared for some city noise.

After enjoying a sporting event downtown, it made sense to stay local. This hotel is a Detroit classic located near Greektown. Wonderful customer service was provided as soon as I stepped on the property. From the doorman to the front desk to housekeeping, service was top shelf.
