National Stockyard Exchange Landmark

This district of town, known as Stockyards City, is home to the largest cattle market in the world. In fact, it was these stock yards that provided the impetus for the state's first major industry. Over the last century, the area had fallen into decline and decay since its inception in 1910, however today the area has been revitalized without losing its authentic 'Old-West' feel. A highlight of the stockyard is a stroll over a walkway that hovers above some of the massive beasts. The shops primarily focus on a variety of western wear, from cowboy hats and boots to Bolo ties and even spurs! It's also pretty accurate to assume that the restaurants in the district serve some of the best steaks in the Midwest, don't forget Cattlemen's Steakhouse. While this area could be considered "touristy," it remains an essential place to visit to get a true picture of 'Ol' OKC'.

This was a very interesting tour—it was fascinating to see the cattle in the stockyards—there are just so many of them, for as far as the eye can see from up on those catwalks. It was pretty cool to see how a live cattle auction functions in person, too. I’ll be very honest, though, I felt very lost in what our guide was saying most of the time. He was clearly very knowledgeable and has worked in the Stockyards for decades, so it was definitely me, not him. I knew absolutely nothing about cattle, ranching or auctions coming in, so his tour was a little too high level for me—a lot of the concepts I either needed an intro or beginner course in before the tour or a handout with definitions, I guess. So even though I didn’t know what he was talking about for the most part, it was still very cool to see something new!

Only remaining working stockyard makes this a must do for those wanted an authentic Oklahoma experience. Take the tour and get to see a live cattle auction. Great education!

We had a 10:30 tour on Monday; auctions are held on Mon and Tue and we'd strongly recommend tours on these days only. Beaux lead our tour. However, this is more of an experience than a tour. Walking on the catwalks above the cows' holding pens (don't drop you phone - the brown 'dirt' underneath is not earth :) and observing the auction is very memorable.

We wanted to feel the old west town and Stockyard City was perfect. We had cowboy hats made for us, we ate at Cattlemans Cafe and just enjoyed this small piece of the old west. The stores had a lot of denim and cowboy/ girl boots. Everyone was nice to us city folk!

We were encouraged by the most recent review by midlife adventure.Sales tours are mon-tues. not sure what happens in the other tours the rest of the week.We were really happy that we did this. Not quite the same experience of the last reviewe but it was also great and a really unique experience.we did the 1030 am tour. 1hr long. free. got lost and went straight to the auction. should have met at the business office I think. possibly the one labeled national livestock credit corp on google maps but can't really be sure since our guide just met us at the auction place. it was smelly but not worse than the elephants at zoos and maybe because it was tuesday and 90% of the cattle were already sold and gone.since our guide, also Beau/Bo? actually didn't expect us, he just sat with us the whole time at the auction and answered all the many questions we could come up with. learned so much about different cows, who the people there were, what numbers meant, why some cows are more expensive than others, etc. It was good that there was just 3 of us because it was hard to hear his very knowledgeable and funny answers. He really couldn't talk loud and disrupt the auction. He also gave us the important tip that Cattlemans steakhouse is full by 6pmfirst time to hear the rapid fire unintelligible auctioneer speech one sees in the movies. fun! they even changed auctioneer and you couldn't tell by just the speech. you had to look that it was a different man. they go to school for this!
