tripadvisorThe Heard Natural Science Museum in a regional treasure. With so much land being developed across the Metroplex, there are fewer and fewer places to walk, see and experience nature and animals. The trails are beautiful, especially the wetlands. It’s up to us to keep this natural area open for future generations.
MoreWorth stopping and spending a few hours here. Started with a 0.5 mile hike with many stops of a various extra large bug exhibits along the trail. Each bug had a plaque with facts. The huge bugs had parts that moved. Really cool for two adults to see. Bugs included a tarantula, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, scorpion etc.. then saw the hurt animals that was a separate short walk. Each Animal had a name and what happened to them on their outdoor area pen. A nice variety of animals to see including owls, coyote, deer etc. Then outside was a small 1880s prairie village of houses you could walk into each one. Very cool. The inside museum was also very cool. Section with live snakes and a tarantula. Loved the red rat snake and the albino snake ( rare to see maybe 1 in every 300,000?). Plus they had dinosaur fossils from Texas. All types of shells, sea horses and mollusks. Very cool exhibit all round. Great for adults and kids. Longer walking trails also on the preserve. I would bring bug spray for the walk. Best $15 you’ll ever spend!
MoreWe’ve been visiting frequently in the last few years. One of the few parts of Dallas children can see countryside. It’s a treasure. More of these, please.
MoreThis place should be a museum only, not have live animals. The enclosures are too small for the animals they have inside in small glass boxes. The miserable tortoise lives out its lonely days on tile floor and looks so sad. With all the outdoor space Heard has, can they not put the tortoise outside when the weather is warm? Do better, Heard. Give the poor creatures to a sanctuary who can take care of them better!
MoreThe Heard’s Museum and Wilderness Sanctuary has it all: fossils, live animals, unique nature trails, and a cute little gift shop. The museum has a wide variety of items and is fun for the whole family. My child didn’t want to leave! The trails are absolutely gorgeous. Whether you like hiking in the woods, wetlands, or prairie, each brings with it beauty and serenity. I bought a membership because I just keep coming back again and again.
