tripadvisorThis historic home started out as two homes—a one story, two room home built for the first owner and a two story, five room home built by the second owner. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of personal belongings and furniture belonging to the original families, because it sat vacant for a while. Our docent, Darlene, did an excellent job of recounting the history of the home and families who lived here. We spent about an hour and the home is worth a visit. There is a small parking lot attached.
MoreWe went on a cold windy March day and were the only participants on the tour, which made it easy to ask questions of our docent, Caroline. She’s quite knowledgeable and while I know our questions threw off her spiel, she was quite gracious in taking time to answer. We have been to lots of old homes and plantations and learn something at every one. In this one, when they wired it for electricity, instead of running wiring down the wall as we have seen often in the past, here they ran it thru the flooring; therefore the light switches are on the floor! Vagrants had built a fire in the middle of one room that had to be repaired, luckily it didn’t engulf the entire house! And there were already fireplaces so you have to wonder why they would do that as well as throw in the staircase spindles as wood to keep it going! Of special interest is the fact that the owner/widow rented out rooms to gentlemen to get by financially but this home was only a block from a legal red light district and she was the mother of several daughters. She didn’t want to take the chance of being seen or known to accept money from a man and so she had a round table with multiple triangular drawers opened only with keys. Her tenants, who each had a key just to their own assigned drawer put their rent into the drawer and she collected the rent with a master key! Wow, what a solution, fun to see that table. Also some beautiful paintings of Texas bluebonnets and portraits on the walls. While very little in the house was original, they had some great period pieces including a WWI uniform. Parking right on the street.
MoreGreat Tour of Historic McCulloch House. Docents were on hand to tell the history of the house. Beautiful grounds. We attended during Holiday so Christmas music and refreshments were included and was very enjoyable.
MoreLovely old house where Waco's beginning families lived. Nice to see the beautiful appointments of the house like the massive staircase and learn how people lived in previous times.
MoreWe arrived about 3:15pm and even though they close at 4:00pm they were nice enough to give myself and my husband a tour. It runs about 45 minutes and Cindy was amazing, she stayed there after hours to make sure all our questions were answered!! She was extremely knowledgeable about the house, what pieces were authentic, and about the people!! Thank you so much. We loved this tour!!
