Opened in 1948, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston's goal is to present the "art of our time." Renovated in 1997, the building sports an elegant interior that is almost as appealing as the exhibits. Regional, national and international artists display their work here, and the museum can also take credit for the successful launch of several local artists' careers. The art exhibits are very diverse, exhibiting the use of various materials and subjects in a wide range of styles. The gift shop might put a significant dent in your wallet, but it is rumored to be one of the best in town.

tripadvisorThis was quite a big and popular museum! Very informative and lots of ways to interact with the material (TVs, drawers to pull out, etc). There are lots of monitors around but don't be intimidated. Just keep an eye on kids and don't step past tape lines.
MoreCost: Free so hard to complain but all 4 of us didn't like itStaff: Friendly but really just standing around. They do not share what you are seeing. Displays: Takes less than an hour to see them all.Children: Not a museum for them. There are several that are for grade school aged children but can't be touched. One display was for sitting but a group was just hanging out and we were told that people just spend time just sitting. There was no time limit and never rushed to move on. Wheelchair: Elevator available
MoreI have visited many interesting places in Houston nut never the Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum recently inaugurated an exhibit with more than 30 paintings by Amoako Boafo. The exhibit is very well curated and quite interesting! It is colorful, unique, phenomenal. The museum is a modern building with also an interesting architecture and design. The museum is very close to the museum of fine arts and the sculpture garden. The area is very nice, quiet, sophisticated. You can arrive by metro. There is no parking; however, you can park at the museum of fine arts. The museum opens from Wednesday through Sunday; it closes at 600 pm; on Thursdays, it closes at 900 pm. You need one hour to see the exhibits. It is generous museum, it is always free! The staff is nice.
MoreDisappointing. A small building filled with a few pieces of junk. No doubt the poorest display of modern art I have seen anywhere to date. This museum is one of several museums located close together so walking between them is easy. The Metrorail train is the best way to travel from downtown to the Museum District.
MoreThis museum is kitty corner to the Museum of Fine Arts and is certainly worth a visit if you are in the area. I saw the current special exhibit, Will Boone: The Highway Hex and it was very good. Admission is free which is another reason not to miss this. It is closed on Monday but open the other 6 days of the week.
