tripadvisorGreat little hike and well worth the views when you get to the top. There are also tables and seats to rest on when you get up there as well as picnic tables along the way. No tree cover.
MoreThe trail condition is mostly very rough to even terrible in places. Very large rocks in the middle of the trail, lots and lots of ruts. The trail is not that well cared for. The picnic tables at the switchbacks are overgrown with weeds. There are no tables or other places to sit on the long straightaway at the trail head. Not really needed for going up, but would be nice for the descend. Bring plenty of water and take breaks. While only 2.1 miles to the summit, it is all uphill (of course) at very steep angles. Once at the top, go further down the narrower path to the next picnic table - the view is even better. Average hikers should plan on a 45 - 80 minute ascend. A walking stick might be helpful.
MoreIt is not an easy walk if you are not used to the climate and height, so the recommendation is to do it at the end of the day or early morning when it is not that hot. Take water with you and slowly make your way up to a gorgious view! You can have a rest inbetween at a picnic table at every turn uphill.
MoreNice hike. Views from the top is amazing. It is a 2 mile up hill hike. Picnic tables at each switch back. Minimal shade. Take water.
MoreAscending this former volcano open with a fairly-flat comfy stretch before really ramping up! Once it does, it stays steep 'til the top, some 2 miles later. This is not for the feint of heart or legs. Also, it's rather rocky (thus posing increased risk of slips and falls) so wear good shoes. No flip-flops! Take water!! Be aware that this is earth, rock, old lava, dirt, drought-stricken bushes. No trees. No shading until the sun's in particular position. Choose your hiking time mindfully. I'm a petite 61-year-old woman, always sporty, avid hiker, quite fit. Even I feel the workout, pace myself, never resting 'til I reach the top. The views and winds are so worth the trek! And the downhill's all the sweeter. Not that it matters but cell-phone reception is poor to zero. (I like to listen to the radio with earplugs of course -- NO TO OUTDOOR NOISE POLLUTION -- but the signal drops frequently. For what it's worth.) In sum, a short but vigorous hike with great views along the breathy way.
