Artpace Art Gallery ·$$$$

Artpace, a local foundation with national influence, anchors the art community with impressive exhibits, active public outreach and an international artist-in-residence program. Each artist's residency is launched with a potluck dinner, which coincides with the exhibit opening and is meant to introduce the resident to the community. Brown-bag lunches with discussions about current exhibits, lectures, seminars, film screenings and community events provide a context for the residents' work and encourage the public to become involved with the contemporary art community. The beautifully renovated 1920s-era building that the foundation calls home was once an automobile dealership. It is only one block from the River Walk in the downtown cultural district, near the Central Library.

A small two story and a roof top eclectic art museum near downtown San Antonio. It has some interesting exhibits and features local artists.

Several galleries were not open but that left more of my attention span for what was there which is good. As does the gallery which is very plain and therefore it neither competes with nor interprets the art. Quiet and assuming yet confident in its feel - I left thinking I’d like anything there. I like the concept; I like that it is free and I liked the installations.

I took my art club on a field trip & this was one of our stops. The students got to see the work of 3 different artists who spend 3 months working on their art and then it gets put up for show. They were intrigued by the styles of these very different artists.

A win! It's impossible to get bored in San Antonio with outstanding places like Artpace. It's intriguing how 9 artists (3 from Texas, 3 from anywhere in the US, and 3 from all over the world) are invited to live and work here for a 4 month time period (in 3 different cycles). The entire experience is FREE (artist's lectures are even offered). The vibe and atmosphere are both uplifting and empowering. Contemporary, fun, inspirational, and informative- all rolled into one. An added bonus: Delicious food trucks nearby. Artpace is proof that you don't have to go far and spend a ton of money to enjoy meaningful experiences. 100% recommend.

I really enjoyed the idea of the in resident artist concept this gallery has to offer. There were only two exhibitions on display due to the artists currently being in the process of new ones when I visited yesterday. The main floor gallery display was marvelous! I enjoyed it tremendously. What I did not enjoy was being overburdened by a female personnel watching and stalking our every move. My husband and I came to enjoy the art but we felt like we couldn't properly discuss or look at the art when we were being treated like possible art criminals. Every step we took, she did too. Perhaps if they need to ensure the safety of the mediocre student art, then guided tours should be offered instead of employees stalking visitors. It was unnecessary due to security cameras being noticeable everywhere too. The average rating on here from me was due to our experience being stalked. On the flip side, the front desk gentleman was very informative. As mentioned before, I did enjoy the exhibition on the main floor but probably won't be back due to the creepy stalking issues.
