Take the El Paso Mission Trail to get a glimpse of this cow-town's frontier past. This nine mile (14.5km) stretch has the famous missions Ysleta and Socorro alongside the San Elizario Presidio and Chapel. The trail originated back between the 16th and 17th Centuries. In fact, these churches are some of the oldest in the country. Check out the pioneer county jail which housed the infamous Billy the Kid or the exhibit on the Salt War of 1877. The Tigua Cultural Center chronicles five centuries of history, from Indian origins to the Spanish conquest. Each of these historic sanctuaries will transport you to a different era. If you want to know the real El Paso, then this trail is an interesting place to start.

tripadvisorThis was so easy, making it worth doing. Just outside of the city. I visited two of the Missions...love the architecture and history. The people who worked at the Soccoro one were super nice and gave us some insight into the church and it's history. Nice gift shop there as well.
MoreI am the FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Huddle Leader for Pecos Barstow Toyah ISD, and I brought 30 6-8 graders from Crockett Middle School to the Mission's; they learned a lot and truly loved the history from a Tribal descendant from Ysleta Church. Go into the sanctuary and look up at the ceiling beams, and look at the color of the petals designs and numbers.Thank you for your hospitality and talking to our kids!Coach Pell
MoreWe enjoyed visiting the San Ysleta Mission, but didn't have time to go to the others. We found it difficult to know where to park. A sign at the parking lot said that it was full, but it was not. We parked across the street in a large lot; I think it was actually for the nearby casino. I wish there had been someone to tell us about the mission, but there was a nice pamphlet to explain it.
MoreWe went on this trail because it was labeled as a “must-do” in El Paso. However, we were disappointed with our experience. The drive was confusing and the stops on the trail were not well labeled. The area itself is not a touristy area and is a sketchier part of town.
MoreI visited there on the presidential day. My purpose was just looking inside the churches, Ysleta, Soccoro, and San Elizario, respectively. However, I happened to meet a person who has great hospitality. I was able to learn about the chapel and Jail in San Elizario fortunately. It's worth visiting.
