Built in 1849, this mansion was originally the home of Senator Forbes Britton. Constructed with local brick and scored masonry, the house got its name after the estate's 100th anniversary in 1949. At the time it was built the former senator could see the wharf from the house. Marvel at the petticoat tables in the foyer, the odd placement of light switches on the floorboards, and the spellbinding porcelain doll collection upstairs, for the house conveys different stories pertaining to different eras.

tripadvisorAs causal travelers, we always make a point to tour historic homes, and have done so across the nation, from Seattle to New Orleans to Charleston to Newport (Rhode Island). The Centennial House in Corpus Christi is an excellent example of an 1850 home and is worthy of a visit. HOWEVER it is open for tours ONLY on Sunday afternoons on the 1st Sunday of each month. Although we've lived in Corpus Christi for almost 30 years, only last month did we visit the house - we've seen it from the outside but only just recently discovered it is open for tours. The house is full of many antiques of the period, ranging from beautiful dinnerware, an old piano, a rope bed, antique toys, and much more. While these items were not from this house, they are authentic period pieces. Free tours are provided by very knowledgeable volunteers associated with the Corpus Christi Area Heritage Society. The Centennial House (aka the Britton-Evans House) is NOT part of the City's Heritage Park, as one Tripadvisor erroneously reported; rather, it is owned and maintained by the non-profit Corpus Christi Area Heritage Society. It is a real treat to see. It is located near downtown on the Bluff overlooking the Bay, directly across the street from the Corpus Christi Cathedral.
MoreThis home built in 1849 is the oldest home in Corpus Christi and is full of many interesting items representative of the period. Tours don't have to be scheduled, but they are available ONLY on the first Sundays of each month, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The home is operated by the non-profit organization Corpus Christi Area Historical Society. Tours of this 2-story well-preserved house museum are given by two well informed ladies who know much about the history of the house and local history. The home is full of many interesting items, ranging from antique toys, beds, ceramics and an antique piano. We are locals, but have toured many homes across the country, including New Orleans, Seattle, Boston, and Rhode Island; this old home in Corpus Christi is definitely worthy of a visit if you enjoy old homes.
