Lady Bird Lake is one of Austin’s best spots for an easy, scenic walk. Named after Lady Bird Johnson, the trail runs along the water and connects all the way to Zilker Park.Expect lovely lake views, shaded paths, and plenty of benches and little bridges to stop and enjoy the scenery. There are kayak rental spots along the way, and while some sections are under restoration, it doesn’t take away from the experience. It took us about 2 hours to walk from Lady Bird Lake to Zilker Park at a relaxed pace. Only downside: speedy cyclists—pretty typical in Austin—so just stay aware, especially if you’ve got kids or pets.

Enjoyable kayaking experience on Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River in downtown Austin. Great views of the Austin skyline from the water and you are surrounded by so much nature yet are in an urban setting. I rented my kayak from Lady Bird Lake Rentals near the Holiday Inn south of the Rainey Street Historic District. The cost was either $40 for 2 hours or $50 all day (until sunset) for a single kayak. I chose the latter and spent almost 3 hours kayaking from the rental shop up to the entrance to Barton Creek and then back passing underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. It was a pretty windy day making the paddling difficult on my return so be aware of the conditions. This is most definitely a relaxing and worthwhile way to spend the afternoon in Austin plus you get a pretty good workout in.

Each time I see the lake from many different angles whether on a walk or in a car I think how beautiful a backdrop it provides to the city

In the summer time the lake is a the lake is a little dirty with algae and there is hardly any current on the river. Paddling is more like hoping you do't fall in.The park is merely an open area in the blistering sun with a little bit of vegetation. Couple of birds and squirrels, but mostly dogs running around. Not a special place even though local tourism board tries to advertise it a lot. Also the biking trail and other sign posting is limited and confusing.
