Saint Mary Cathedral Building

Saint Mary Cathedral, designed by noted Texan architect Nicholas J. Clayton, is one of oldest Catholic churches in Austin. Its construction was completed in 1884, but exquisite French and German stained glass windows were added in much later. A beautiful piece of Gothic Revival architecture, this small cathedral now seems almost dwarfed by the high-rise buildings downtown. Apart from regular Sunday services, weekly masses are also conducted; check website for further information.

This a beautiful church. The architecture is fantastic and the liturgy was done beautifully by the priest at morning Mass.

Beautiful older church , the cathedral of Austin. The colors in the stained glass and wall accents are vibrant. Interesting to see the female congregants wearing mantillas.

Always such a wonderful experience being able to attend Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral, downtown Austin! The service is sacred, the music is wonderful. Very engaged parish, mostly locals, who care about that area of the city. Even non-Catholics enjoy this venue, it’s a beautiful, special place. Highly recommend you visit!

St. Mary's is a welcoming parish in the HEART of a major city. I was impressed by the turnout at the weekly Saturday evening Mass. Sitting in front of me was a beautiful family of five, with three young children all dressed up in their Sunday best. Sharing the Peace of Christ with these children gave me hope for the future.Even if you are not a practicing Roman Catholic, I urge you to attend a Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral during a visit to Austin. Like going to a museum or a concert, this spiritual event would help immerse you in the culture of Austin.

I'm not Christian but my husband had a Christian upbringing and we wandered into Saint Mary Cathedral while walking in Austin. I sat in the back while he went to the front pews to pray. This cathedral is just a few blocks from the State Capitol building. It's one of the oldest as it was completed in 1874. The cathedral was designed in the Victorian style and has since been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The interior is beautiful with the stained glass windows and arched ceilings. If you are a fan of religious architecture, this is a must visit. Check the website for hours of operation. The Cathedral School of St. Mary holds the distinction of one of the oldest schools in operation located in Austin. It's a beautifully designed historic building that warrants a visit when in Austin.
