Casa Neverlandia Building ·$

The studio and home of artist James Edward Talbot is known as Casa Neverlandia, as everything from its exterior to the art displayed inside represents something out of this world. Once you're done exploring the house, take the plank bridge to the tree house in the back yard, then take the firefighter pole back down to ground level. The museum is open by appointment only, and is definitely worth the planning ahead. The entire house is "green", as in solar panels and the like, so it is definitely a treat for the eco-friendly! Check out his website to know more about Talbot and call to book your visit!

This is one of those “weird” but endearing sites to be found around Austin. Toured the house one Sunday in January with my husband and 14 yr old son. Both were very intrigued with the house. The owner/artist himself gave us a tour. He actually does live in the house, and you need to call or email ahead to arrange a tour time. It is $15 pp cash only. He gave us a very detailed walk through of his home and art. Parts of it reminded me of Dr Seuss and , in fact, the artist referenced him during his talk. There were lush mosaics throughout- both outside and inside- and swirly, colorful plasterwork too. The artist attributes much of his inspiration to his time traveling and living all over the world while his father was a pilot in the Air Force . There is a Tower in the backyard that can be accessed either by a VERY narrow suspension bridge or a couple of ladders. The views are spectacular, but this is NOT a part of the tour that you should attempt if you are afraid of heights or have any physical problems with your agility/stamina!!! His studio is also out back, and he will walk you through. He has pieces for sale, if you are interested. He is very informative and has several practical additions to his whimsical home- a speaker tube installed in the walls connects most rooms to front door, recycling water tanks, multi use spaces, etc. Well worth a stop! Don’t miss it!

We loved seeing Talbot's art-house, a multidecade labor of love unlike any house you've ever seen. He is a creator of playscapes, a beautiful sculpture at South Congress & E Live Oak, and artwork on the Austin airport skywalks. But at his house he's his own client, and you can see how inventive & energetic he is. I think the less you know going there, the more you'll be delighted. Be aware there is one very unsafe-looking part of the tour that isn't good for small children, but it can be avoided without missing anything. Check Facebook for tours, usually on a Saturday or Sunday!

This home was part of the Weird Homes Tour. It was such a cool and unique house. I highly recommend this must see home.

This is the one thing you MUST do in Austin! Over several decades James Talbot has transformed a nondescript bungalow into a three-story green home that is also a work of art. His home is a wonderland and every room sparks joy and awe. If you are at all interested in art, architecture or sustainable living this is the place for you! Tours are listed on his facebook page but if you email in advance he will often arrange a tour for you.
