tripadvisorUpon arrival, you can smell the antiquity of this space. It's art by and wonderful! You walk into a very inviting, large space and wait for your turn to sign in and walkabout this enormous building. After wondering around the front lobby, you pick which direction you want to go. We would be drawn to the dimly-lit area just beyond the reception desk. Oh what fascinating facts and treasures this place would reveal! The Diaramas are telling a story from their glass encasements, which are sprinkled throughout the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. The story of this area starts here, in this room. It would take us hours to talk about this monumental space. My wish is that my grandchildren will be able to take their children, and there will be a future for this magnificent Museum, for all to enjoy.*Although I came here quite often, with family and friend, I feel like I took it for granted now that it's no longer available to me.
MoreA bit of a surprise. Didn't expect much from what appeared to be a university museum. Very interesting set of exhibits including such things as barbed wire (which I knew nothing about) and telephone pole conductors (who knew?).
MoreI only wish they were open either Sunday or Monday!! We arrived on a Saturday, later than I wanted, so only had time to see part of it. The Paleontology area was stunning!! I have never seen the eras presented in such a way - fantastic! The People of the Plains area was interesting. Archeology was quite good. We just got into the Panhandle Petroleum Story when we ran out of time. This museum was SO good that we might have to make another trip from Michigan to go back and see the whole thing!
MoreThis was a really pleasant surprise! Lots of information on the petroleum industry's impact on the area. Had a fantastic section on the Native Americans of the area. The antique cars were fabulous. Definitely worth a stop - allow plenty of time as there are lots of exhibits to keep you engaged.
MoreWe were impressed at the size and the depth of this museum. Most displays are well-done and we learned some detail of life in the Texas panhandle. Antique cars alone made the visit worthwhile. Much larger than it appears on the outside.
