tripadvisorWe took a day trip just to explore. The Rangers are very nice and helpful. There are lots of trails to walk on that are easy . They are great camping spots with hook ups. There’s a pool. It was not open when we were there, but it’s early in the season. How we drove out to look at Lake Abilene that was a shock! There’s no lake. It is completely dried up is a little eerie. We were glad we went to see it, but it was quite sad to see how bad the drought is.
MoreThis is a lovely park for hiking. Good trails abound, and friendly hosts. What I can't understand is why they don't post a message or sign as you drive in, that the lake is empty and dry!!! Instead they keep people in the dark, people who are going up to put their kayak in, find out the hard way!!. No Kudos to the park staff here.
MoreTheir drought has taken a toll on the park. The Buffalo Wallow was very low of water & Lake Abilene was Dry. However, we enjoyed the hiking trails & our campsite. We loved the quiet & peacefulness of ASP. The wildlife was spectacular.
MoreGenerally we have a great time here but this 2024 memorial day weekend is going to be a disappointment. Apparently there was a tree down at our booked site, since March, and they moved us to another site 1.5 weeks before the holiday and there is no way to get something else booked somewhere else. We know the park and know for a fact that the new site is probably the worst site in the park. No shade, no grass. There is a reason it has not been booked 1.5 weeks before memorial day weekend. They claim they cannot get our previously booked site cleared in 1.5 weeks. I could do it in a few hours by myself. Not impressed by this bad turn of events.
MoreThis is our second time to stay at this park. We truly enjoy walking the trails because they're easy & maintained. The Buffalo Wallow is a pretty spring fed pond with a small floating dock. We loved sitting by the campfire listening to the birds, squirrels & an occasional plane from Dyess AFB.
