Driving amid the arid, central Texan countryside, it is a delight to chance upon the quaint Fort Phantom Hill. This fort belonged to the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. It dates back to 1852 and its remnants include a brown chimney, an abandoned guard house, intriguing inscriptions and a white, stone-walled magazine.

tripadvisorA really great historic site and short hike! Easy to find, just a short drive. Well maintained and just enough information provided about the site and the history. We enjoyed the beautiful wildflowers and how up close we were able to get to the structures.
MoreIf you like quiet walks and history.......this is the place! Pamphlet helps guide and explain. Clean bathrooms available. Went on a weekday and no other people. Trails are well mowed thru the field.
MoreThis is a cool historical place to check out. It is worth spending an hour or so here checking out the remains of the historic buildings.
MoreThere is no welcome center or anything. There is a parking lot with an information board and some bathrooms. You can walk among the ruins, which mostly consists of the old chimneys and a few buildings.
MorePretty little historical sight. We found it hard to find, not sure if it was our navigational app but if you are looking for it this is the address. 10818 FM600, Abilene, TX 79601It was a very tidy location, well maintained. The car park was paved and there are bathrooms on site.It is free and had complementary maps with information on the location telling you about the remains and what they used to be. Very well done.Probably 30min-1hr would be plenty to look around. We are glad we took the effort to find this spot.
